Reasons you may need a driver improvement course:
-You accumulate 12 demerit points within 12 months or 18 pointswithin 24 months. In these instances the course must be completed within 90 days.
-You are convicted of demerit-point traffic violation (safety belt or child restraint violation) committed when you were under age 20.
-You can receive 5 safe driving points if you voluntarily complete a driver improvement course. Safe driving points will not be awarded if clinic attendance was required by DMV or ordered by the Court.
